The CICA (Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority) is a government department that provides compensation to victims of violent crimes and abuse.

If you have been the victim of a violet crime or abuse and suffered physical and/or psychological injuries as a result, you may be able to claim through the CICA. Gifford Cairns offer a No Win No Fee service.

Our Solicitors can help you with:

  • Making a CICA Claim
  • Review an application if you’re making a claim yourself
  • Review the prospects of an exisiting claim
  • Make appeals to the Tribunal

Who can apply for CICA compensation?

If you have been the victim of a violent crime or abuse, you may be able to claim. The CICA have set eligibility criteria, which includes:

  • The incident must have happened in England, Wales or Scotland
  • The incident must have been reported to the police
  • You must fully co-operate with the police and CICA

If you have criminal convictions, your claim may be reduced or rejected depending on the details of your conviction. We can assess this when required.

What type of crimes qualify for compensation?

Violent crimes such as:

  • Assault including common assaults, stabbings and shottings
  • Physical and Sexual Abuse
  • Domestic Violence
  • Deliberate Hit and Run cases
  • Robberies
  • Murder
  • And more

Do I need a Police Report to make a claim?

Yes, you must have reported the claim to the Police and co-operated with them throughout their investigations.

How long do I have to Claim?

Generally claims must be made within two years of the crime. Exceptions may apply for cases involving children or exceptional circumstances such as historical abuse.

The defendant does not need to caught, charged or convicted. The CICA decides on available records and medical evidence rather than the outcome of the criminal trial.

Will I have the right to anonymity?

Yes, your identity will remain confidential when making a CICA claim. CICA does not share your details with the offender, and your application will be handled privately.

If your claim involves sexual offenses or domestic abuse, you are automatically granted lifetime anonymity under UK law. This means your name cannot be published in the media, and extra privacy measures can be taken if your case goes to a tribunal.

Additionally, if your case involves a police investigation, your identity will not be publicly disclosed, and special protections may be available if you are required to give evidence.

If you have concerns about your privacy, you can discuss additional protections when submitting your claim.
